This year’s annual GlobalFest Human Rights Forum presented by TD Breakfast will feature Mohamed Fahmy speaking on “Media in the Age of Terror: How the War on Terrorism Became a War on Journalism”. Fahmy will be discussing his story and advocacy for world press freedom on Wednesday, August 17th from 7:30AM-9:30AM at Chinatown’s Civic on 3rd (130 3 Ave SE).

The formerly imprisoned Mohamed Fahmy is an award winning Egyptian-Canadian journalist and author. Fahmy has spent most of his career covering some of the most definitive global events that have shaped our world today. Fahmy’s most recent post as the Egypt Bureau Chief of Al Jazeera International captured world attention when he was arrested in December 2013. Fahmy was incarcerated for 400 days – including one month in solitary – alongside ISIS terrorists and Jihadists in Egypt’s various maximum security prisons. Charged with conspiring with the Muslim Brotherhood and fabricating news to the fundamentalist group’s agenda, Egypt and its government were faced with international outcry from the United Nations, the European Union, and U.S. President Barack Obama. In September of 2015, Fahmy was pardoned by the Egyptian government and returned home to Canada in October 2015. Now on his path of reflection on this life-changing experience, Fahmy is joining us at GlobalFest’s annual Human Rights Forum Breakfast. Additionally, Fahmy will be participating in a free-to-attend panel discussion on local, national, and international freedom of press from 4:00pm – 6:00pm at the John Dutton Theatre (616 Macleod Trail SE) later on in the afternoon of August 17th.

  • In just over a month, the Big Four Building will be transformed into the new International Pavilion at the 2016 Calgary Stampede. Together with new community partner, GlobalFest, the Stampede is celebrating the amazing ethno-cultural dynamic that our city has to offer.

The rich and diverse cultural make up of Calgary and the communities in which we live can be experienced through music, performances, cultural displays, food and drinks – with performances from the high-flying, breathtaking Peking Acrobats, shopping at the International Street Market, flavours from around the world at The Range International Food Market and entertainment at the Cultural Community Stage.

“We are so excited for this new programming and international theme, along with the community partnership with GlobalFest, to bring a new vibrancy to Stampede,” says Allison Wright, midway programming manager with the Stampede.

“Over the past 20 years the face of Calgary has changed. Increasingly we’ve become a Global city with people from all over the world calling Calgary home; the western heritage, the new frontier,” says Ken Goosen, producer with GlobalFest.

Headlining at the International Theatre and celebrating their 30th Anniversary Tour, The Peking Acrobats travel the world and hold their reputation as world class performers. They have sold out crowds at some of North America’s most recognized venues. Over 44,000 tickets were sold in just three performances at the Hollywood Bowl. They also earned the Guinness World Record for tallest human chair stack when they balanced six people on seven chairs to reach 21 feet with no safety lines. When The Peking Acrobats were last here in 2014, the Calgary Herald named the show the top attraction to visit at the Calgary Stampede.

Performing in the upper level of the Big Four Building, The Peking Acrobats is free with Stampede Park admission. Show times for July 8, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 17 are at 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., while you can catch the Acrobats on July 9, 10, 13 and 16 at 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Venture from The Peking Acrobats to the International Street Market, also located in the upper level of the Big Four Building, and discover unique treasures that reflect the essence of our city’s cultural infusion.

This year’s Stampede is July 8-17, 2016. For more information please visit calgarystampede.com.
