Doi Chaang Coffee to Wrap up the 2012 Human Rights Forum
Doi Chaang Coffee - An Inspirational Success Story
(Calgary, AB - August 17, 2012) A very powerful story was shared on the stage at the last day of the GlobalFest Human Rights Forum presented by TD. The success that Doi Chaang Coffee has been able to achieve in such a short time, is truly inspiring. Their captivating story, coming from Thailand, at the tip of the Golden Triangle, speaks about the Akha Hill Tribe of the Doi Chaang Village. Doi Chaang’s partnership with the Canadian group located in Vancouver, has impacted the coffee company greatly.
From opium to coffee, Doi Chaang’s ability to overcome adversity and government oppression, has allowed them to create a sustainable economic endeavor. Doi Chaang’s accomplishment of being rated number one coffee in the world, is a result of the northern hill tribe community coming together and working towards a common goal: beyond fair trade coffee. The coffee company, originated in Thailand, owns 50% of the company and receives 50% of the Canadian Companies profits, this has allowed the village to grow and have the capacity to build within the community.
Believing in the power of people was a significant way to conclude the 2012 GlobalFest Human Rights Forum presented by TD. The Doi Chaang Coffee company story is one that deserves to be told and spread across the world. “Beyond Fair Trade” is an excellent economic model that corporations should learn from, and Doi Chaang is a prime example.
