GlobalFest Joins Forces with UNAC-Calgary for 2017 Human Rights Forum

(Calgary, AB – July 17, 2017) Going into its 11th annual Human Rights Forum, GlobalFest has partnered with the United Nations Association in Canada Calgary Branch (UNAC-Calgary) to present five-days of knowledge sharing and dialogue on important Indigenous issues.

“GlobalFest is thrilled to welcome UNAC-Calgary as our new presenting sponsor of the Human Rights Forum.  We’ve enjoyed working together in supporting roles in the past, and we look forward to the incredible outcomes this collaborative partnership will yield, not only for this year but for many years to come,” said GlobalFest Producer Ken Goosen.

From August 8th -12th at the John Dutton Theatre, the Forum will feature over 15 different speakers; such as Canadian singer/songwriter Lacey Hill of the Oneida First Nations in Ontario, and actress/vocalist/ storyteller, Cherish Blood Violet, originally from the Kainai First Nations in Alberta.

Speakers and performing artists will explore personal stories, knowledge, and practical solutions related to Indigenous communities and issues in Canada.  Discussions will cover a wide range of topics from Two- Spirited identity, to Indigenous resource development and asset management, and over-representation in Canada’s correctional facilities. The Forum will also feature the GlobalFest Indigenous Urban Arts Program: (Work in Progress) Seeking Reconciliation.

“We are proud to be the lead sponsor of this event.  It aligns strategically with our Branch’s mandate to engage and educate Calgarians on the work of the United Nations (UN), especially around environmental and human rights issues. The Forum also gives our two organizations the opportunity to champion the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals - many of which can be applied directly to Canada’s Indigenous communities,” said UNAC-Calgary President Rosalinda Hernandez.

Admission to the Human Rights Forum is free and features a post-event reception with light snacks. For more information on speakers and scheduling please visit http://globalfest.ca
