Trico Homes’ mission is to “Enhance our Customers Lives while Enriching the Community,” a mandate that is very closely aligned with GlobalFest’s core value of producing an inclusive multi-cultural festival and celebrating the unique cultures found in Calgary. This partnership over the past four years has proven extremely successful, largely due to Trico’s commitment to “Embracing Multi-Culturalism and Celebrating Diversity.”
This sponsorship renewal goes hand in hand with Trico’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and belief that it is their role to support the communities in which they build. As Richard Gotfried, Vice President of Corporate and Community Relations puts it, they “are thrilled to be a part of bringing world-class pyromusical entertainment to Calgary for the enjoyment of Festival Guests of all ages!”
We at GlobalFest are excited about the continuation of our long-term relationship with Trico Homes, and are looking forward to the many exciting years to come!

- GlobalFest’s Open House on Friday, May 28th was the perfect party to begin the summer! When GlobalFest made the decision to move across the hall in February, we approached various people to ask for help in creating this new office space. The generous donations of our newly coined “Legacy Partners” – everything from walls, to carpets, to cubicles – helped make our dreams a reality! At the Legacy Partners Reception, we celebrated these generous donations by unveiling a Legacy Wall and making presentations. This was followed by an Open House for the friends and supporters of GlobalFest. Guests were able to see our new offices, mix and mingle with staff and fellow GlobalFest partners, and enjoy a great spread of food prepared by some of the GlobalFest 2010 cultural pavilions. A great turnout, successful party, and new Legacy Wall later, all of us at GlobalFest want to sincerely thank each and every person for coming out!

- GlobalFest Human Rights Forum FREE Screening of Prom Night In Mississippi!
Date: Sunday, May 2, 2010
Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Location: The Plaza Theatre
Street: 1133 Kensington Rd NW
Description:
Join us for a FREE screening of Prom Night In Mississippi to open the GlobalFest 2010 Human Rights Forum! In attendance to introduce the film will be filmmakers Paul Saltzman and Patricia Aquino to prepare you for the Q & A event on Monday, May 3 from 11:30am - 1:00pm in the John Dutton Theatre at the Calgary Public Library.
About the film:
In 1997, Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman offered to pay for the senior prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi under one condition: the prom had to be racially integrated. His offer was ignored. In 2008, Freeman offered again. This time the school board accepted, and history was made. Charleston High School had its first-ever integrated prom - in 2008. Until then, blacks and whites had had separate proms even though their classrooms have been integrated for decades. Canadian filmmaker Paul Saltzman follows students, teachers and parents in the lead-up to the big day. This seemingly inconsequential rite of passage suddenly becomes profound as the weight of history falls on teenage shoulders. We quickly learn that change does not come easily in this sleepy Delta town. Freeman's generosity fans the flames of racism - and racism in Charleston has a distinctly generational tinge. Some white parents forbid their children to attend the integrated prom and hold a separate white-only dance. "Billy Joe," an enlightened white senior, appears on camera in shadow, fearing his racist parents will disown him if they know his true feelings. PROM NIGHT IN MISSISSIPPI captures a big moment in a small town, where hope finally blossoms in black, white and a whole lot of taffeta. - David Courier, Sundance Film Festival

- GLOBALFEST 2010 TO PRESENT THE FUTURE VOICES OF HUMAN RIGHTS
– This year’s GlobalFest Human Rights Forum is set to bring together local and international speakers to address issues of racism and discrimination among youth and to open dialogue about solutions for the future. The speakers will represent organizations ranging from law enforcement to the immigrant and refugee experience, and will even include filmmakers that will present a free screening of Prom Night In Mississippi at 7 pm on May 2nd, 2010 at The Plaza Theatre.
“Issues of racism and discrimination that our youth today face are not that significantly different from what traditionally existed,” says Lynn Berry, Human Rights Forum Director. “The difference is that they have access to more resources and more opportunities to exchange experiences, which helps us come closer to the solutions.”

- THE 6th ANNUAL GLOBALFEST FILMFEST CLOSES AFTER
EXPOSING CALGARY TO THREE DAYS OF UNIQUE WORLD FILMS - GlobalFest FilmFest closed out its three days of compelling documentary feature films and international special guests with a bright outlook for the future. The series inspired its audiences to ask some compelling questions of their societies and of themselves, and gave them a glimpse into parts of culture that help all of us know and respect each other more.
“The way audiences responded to the films makes me very proud of the city Calgary has become.” says Angel Cheng, Festival Producer and Programmer,“People want to see more content that opens up possibilities and perspectives with a global influence. I am confident that we will continue to grow in every way as a festival, and as an international community.”
A risky move to program documentaries exclusively, the best attended films such as Official Rejection, Roadsworth: Crossing the Line, and Only When I Dance, indicate that Calgarians are strongly interested in films that represent true and compelling stories and ideas.

- CALGARY EXPOSED TO FILMS OF THE WORLD - The GlobalFest FilmFest is set to feature revealing Canadian and international independent documentaries at the Plaza Theatre January 29th – 31st, 2010. Revolutionary and compelling films will have Calgary’s cinema scene abuzz, opening with the Calgary Premiere of Paul Osborne’s Official Rejection, which has been defined in the filmmaking industry as “a MUST SEE for EVERY indie filmmaker.” Star and Producer Scott Storm will be in attendance, giving audiences the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session after the screening of this multiple award-winning film. This year’s lucky GlobalFest FilmFest audience members also receive a complimentary ticket to Finale Night at the 2010 Trico Homes International Fireworks and Golder Associates OneWorld Festivals at Elliston Park with each admission purchase.
“Calgary’s movie audiences have grown significantly both in numbers and level of sophistication. Calgarians have shown a desire for the additional diverse representation that the GlobalFest FilmFest program offers. Canadian film Roadsworth: Crossing the Line shows a truly unique expression of defining social boundaries, whereas the Alberta Premiere of Only When I Dance shows how breaching those boundaries are sometimes a means of survival.” says Angel Cheng, Festival Producer and Programmer. “The films of Exposed are chosen with both Canadian and international perspectives in mind, to represent both the similarities and the differences in our cultures.”

- Spain lights Calgary’s night sky over the lake at Elliston Park!
Calgarians and visitors joined in a colourful celebration of Calgary’s diversity at GlobalFest on Tuesday evening. The Trico Homes International Fireworks and Golder Associates OneWorld Festivals entertained spectators with amazing cultural performances, delicious food and a pyromusical presentation from Spain. This Tuesday evening was the busiest in GlobalFest history, drawing thousands to Elliston Park.
Pirotecnia Turis S.L., a pyrodesign company from Valencia, Spain, floored the crowds with a powerful performance over the lake at Elliston Park. Every colour and shape filled the night sky, reflecting off the lake. The soundtrack to the fireworks ranged from classical Spanish music to The Police, but it all came together in an amazing display of lights and sounds. The show titled ‘Spanish Sighs’ aroused ‘ooos’ and ‘ahs’ from spectators at the park.
GlobalFest has increased the size of the pyromusical presentations by 20 per cent, giving festival goers bigger and better shows than ever before.
This year, pyrodesigners must base 25 per cent of their presentation on music that is unique to their home country, highlighting the multicultural aspect of GlobalFest. Spain choreographed fireworks to the sounds of Carmen and Luis Cobos, setting a perfect mood for a still summer evening.
GlobalFest fireworks can shoot up to 1000 feet in the air, roughly twice the size of any inner city fireworks. The fireworks are so big, the air space above Elliston Park is shut down during the festival.
GlobalFest brings Calgarians and visitors together in a unique celebration of diversity, showcasing over 60 different cultures from around the world.
GlobalFest brings in the best pyrodesigners from around the globe to share their artistry and vision in the form of pyromusicals, and you will not find anything else like it in Alberta.
The weather is looking great for the rest of the week, so make the most of the last days of summer at GlobalFest. The returning nation China presents on August 27, followed by the grand finale produced by GlobalFest on Saturday, August 29.
Gates open at 6:00 pm and general admission is $15.00. It is recommended to come to the park early, find a spot on the grass for the fireworks and take in the OneWorld village featuring 20 Cultural Pavilions, 13 Ethnic Food Kiosks and three performance stages.
GlobalFest would like to encourage festival goers to take the Southland Shuttle buses from Marlborough Mall, and access GlobalFest’s newest Park & Ride lot, Trinity/Tristar at 17th (International) Avenue, east of 84th Street (only 16 blocks east of Elliston Park) running from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. - Controversial Osooyos Indian Band Chief to speak at Third Annual GlobalFest Human Rights Forum.
The 2009 GlobalFest Human Rights Forum is from August 17 to 21 from 11:30 to 2:00 pm at the Glenbow Museum in the ConocoPhillips Theatre. Chief Clarence Louie of the Osooyos Indian Band Development to speak at third annual Human Rights Forum at the Glenbow Musuem. Chief Clarence Louie will be speaking Thursday, August 20 on the daily topic of “The Aboriginal Experience,” in relation to equity in the labour market.
Since 1985, when first becoming Chief of the Osoyoos Indian Band in British Columbia, Clarence Louie has consistently emphasized economic development as the fundamental method for improving his people's standard of living. Under his direction, the Band has become a multi-faceted corporation that owns and manages numerous successful businesses. Speaking on his band’s business success, Chief Louie says “As an adult here, you either go to school or you go to work. If you’re not in school or you’re not in a job, whether you are native or non native, I think there’s something wrong with you. You’re messed up, go get some counseling.”
In addition to the businesses, the band is enjoying socio-economic development that is vastly improving the community's social, educational and health needs. Under his leadership, there is virtually zero unemployment. The band continues to increase its revenue each year and decrease its need for social assistance. To bands that are having problems with poverty, Chief Clarence Louie simply says “work harder.” “Generations of racism and welfare have crippled the First Nations and the only cure is hard work.” Chief Louie believes that business is the key to ending native poverty. First Nations living conditions or quality of life rank among those of Third World countries. More than half of all houses on First Nations reserves are contaminated by mold, and 25% of First Nations water infrastructures are at a high risk of contamination.
Chief Louie created and manages eight businesses, including, a golf course, a construction company that builds both on and off reserve commercial and residential projects, a forestry company that logs 30,000 cubic metres annually, the largest privately owned vineyard in Canada, a convenience store, and a residential and agricultural leasing company. Chief Louie is also the first Chief in over 100 years to add land to his band’s reserve. “I encourage bands to buy property anytime they can get the money to buy property. Land is always a good investment.” The Osooyos reserve is now over 32,000 acres in the South Okanagan Valley. Close to two towns, the land is prime tourist territory and prime agricultural land.
Chief Louie has been recognized for his work with many honours and has extensive board memberships. He has been featured in The Economist, in Profit Magazine and in Maclean's as one of 50 Canadians to Watch. Chief Louie is a man who understands that economic development is the way of the future.

Clarkson has always shown a deep interest and passion in the people that make up our country; she once stated:

- GOVERNMENT OF CANADA INVESTS IN CALGARY’S GLOBALFEST
On behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, Devinder Shory, Member of Parliament for Calgary Northeast, today announced the Government of Canada’s investment of more than $240 000 to support Calgary’s GlobalFest as part of the Marquee Tourism Events Program.
“The Government of Canada is proud to be making these very significant investments to attract visitors to Calgary from throughout Alberta, across the country and around the world,” said Mr. Shory. “Through strategic partnerships with truly incredible experiences like GlobalFest, we illustrate Canada’s rich cultural and social attractions to the world while contributing to the long-term growth of our Canadian visitor economy.”
“I am thrilled with the tremendous support being provided by Industry Canada and the Government of Canada. Through the Marquee Tourism Events Program, we have been able to extend our marketing campaign from Winnipeg to Vancouver Island, expand our festival programming, increase the size of our international pyromusical presentations and offer festival patrons and visitors to the community many hours of additional festival programming,” said Michael Gretton, Chairman, GlobalFest Board of Directors.
“As one of the 2009 Top 100 Events in North America, this funding has enabled GlobalFest to move several years ahead in the further development of our tourism marketing program. This truly makes us ‘Alberta’s Most Explosive Festival’.”
Each August, Calgary’s GlobalFest presents community-driven ethnocultural events, including a diverse platform of regional and national performing artists, fireworks and more.
Funding from the Marquee Tourism Events Program will allow GlobalFest to enhance and expand its media and promotional campaigns in order to target U.S. and Canadian markets, including further promotion to international tour operators through a new promotional DVD/CD. GlobalFest will also be purchasing much needed new equipment, as well as enhancing its fireworks presentations — identified as the heart of the festival.
The Government of Canada’s Marquee Tourism Events Program is investing $100 million over two years to assist events such as this one across the country. This program will help organizers expand the reach of their events and promote Canada as a must-see tourist destination to visitors from around the globe.
The Marquee Tourism Events Program is one of several tourism-related programs announced in Canada’s Economic Action Plan. These programs provide measures to support Canada’s economy, stimulate the growth of tourism and contribute to the development of Canada’s visitor economy over the long term.
They include the following:
• $150 million over two years for national parks and historic sites; and
• $40 million over two years to the Canadian Tourism Commission for domestic and international marketing.
For more information, please visit the Marquee Tourism Events Program website or the Canada’s Economic Action Plan website.

In 2008, GlobalFest took home the Immigrants of Distinction Diversity Award in the Government and Non-Profit category.
Festival organizers wish to thank Tourism Calgary, the thousands of Calgarians and their friends and family from afar who have been attending the festival since 2003. The White Hat of the Year Award is is a great honor. Congratulations to all other 2009 recipients and nominees for being acknowledged as some of the best in the tourism and hospitality industries.
GlobalFest features a multiplicity of community-driven, ethno-cultural performances and events, a diverse platform of regional and national performing artists, and pyro-musical artistry in an international fireworks festival.

- GlobalFest named one of North America’s 100 best events for 2009
The American Bus Association (ABA) announced that GlobalFest has been designated as one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2009 by an elite tourism industry selection committee.
“The attraction of GlobalFest as a don’t-miss entertainment value is only part of why its selection this year is such a distinction for Calgary,” said Peter J. Pantuso, ABA’s president and CEO. “The real news here is that GlobalFest has been recognized as a…magnet for tourism dollars, at a time when reenergizing domestic tourism is so important to our spirit and our economy. The honor gives GlobalFest an important boost in visibility among professional tour planners.”
ABA’s 2009 Top 100 Events Selection Committee selected GlobalFest from among hundreds of U.S. and Canadian events nominated by state and provincial tourism offices and convention and visitors bureaus. Judges considered the event’s broad appeal, its accessibility to motorcoaches and skill at handling large groups, and a variety of other relevant criteria.

- GlobalFest 2008 – China takes home gold
Team China was awarded the coveted Trico Homes International Fireworks Competition trophy tonight. Team China’s pyro-musical display went last Sunday, and they pulled off an amazing show.
The show, entitled Once Upon a Time in China, captured the essence of China, along with its cultures and music; a beautiful classic soundtrack with easy-to-remember contemporary melodies. The pyromusical spectacle emphasized rhythm and reflected the mood and meaning of each piece of music used, creating a truly memorable event for the second night of the competition.
The Grand Finale show was presented by the GlobalFest pyro team at the Trico Homes International Fireworks Competition. The biggest closing show ever, the audience was left speechless, only having the ability to clap and cheer as the smoke cleared from the sky.
Next year’s Trico Homes International Fireworks Competition holds yet another fantastic potential line-up. Countries that have been invited to the 2009 competition include:
Canada
China
Mexico
Spain
Team China, MMF Hunan Fireworks Company Limited, is invited to compete during next year’s festivities as the returning 2008 Grand Champion of the International Fireworks Competition. Other teams invited include recent winners of Vancouver’s prestigious Celebration of Lights.
