Nigeria

Goodluck Nwaerondu
IKENGA: THE GOD OF STRENGTH AND SUCCESS
The name Ikenga, the Igbo god of strength, originates in the Igbo culture of Eastern Nigeria – it has an important connection to the spiritual and psychical dimensions of the culture and the individual. One interpretation of Ikenga is the destiny, which an unborn soul discovers with the help of its personal god (Chi), before it enters into the physical realm. In this case, the creation and consecration of Ikenga is the process of activating this destiny and living it out. As a group, we reaffirm our cultural belief in Ikenga, a symbol that creates life force, justice and equity in a communal and social context. A reminder of our sacred and spiritual obligation to honour those we cross paths with on our journey through life both at home and in Diaspora.

Men commission, dedicate and consecrate Ikenga as their personal strength, success, and accomplishments, as well as their protection. Warriors, farmers, traders, smiths, and others prayed and sacrificed at the Ikenga altars before important undertakings. In our effort to continue to find our spiritual justice, peace and equity, we embrace Ikenga values and virtues to build and support our community here in Canada, showcasing the diverse cultural heritage of Canada. Come to the Nigerian Pavilion and be immersed into all aspects of our culture!

Venezuela

Ernesto Cudino
Welcome to the Venezuelan Culture Pavilion where we will be showing our music and dance. The music and dance of Venezuela is an expression of its culture – the "Joropo" is the most typical one. The Joropo is a musical style that represents the Creole Music in Venezuela accompanied by dance. It is a rural art form which originated in the "Llanos Venezolanos", or Venezuela's plains. The Joropo became the national dance in Venezuela.

The meaning of Joropo is a party and is 3played with an arpa llanera (harp), bandola, cuatro, and maracas. The most popular Joropo is the well-known song "Alma Llanera", which is considered the unofficial national anthem, followed by the songs "Guayane Es", "Moliendo Café", "Apure", among others. All of these songs and dances are going to be performed during GlobalFest by the group Pasos de Venezuela.

Pasos de Venezuela is a dance troupe that belongs to the Venezuelan-Canadian Association of Calgary (VCAC). This year, you are invited to visit the "Venezuelan Culture Pavilion" at GlobalFest 2011, and discover more interesting things about our culture.
