The Golder Associates OneWorld Festival will play host to various activities on site:

Calgary's Elliston Park comes alive in August with the OneWorld Festival. This year the park is open at 6:00 pm, so come early, set up your lawn chairs and experience everything that the Golder Associates OneWorld Festival has to offer! Take in the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes from around the world. With everything from heritage dress, cultural music, incredible performances and interactive activities, there is something for everyone!

Try some authentic ethnic food at one of the 12 food kiosks stationed around the park, or try a cold drink from the OneWorld Café and International Bar. With so many choices, you are sure to find something you like!

The 24 Cultural Pavilions showcase and celebrate over 60 unique cultures from Alberta's ethnic communities. There is nothing else like it in Calgary! The OneWorld Festival creates a "crash course" in the appreciation and understanding of many cultures here in Calgary.

Night Market @ Elliston Park

For the first time ever, GlobalFest will be hosting a Night Market, open all nine nights of the festival! Here's what you can look forward to:

  • Local vendors selling ethno-cultural goods
  • Ethnic food kiosks will remain open
  • Performances every night on the OneWorld Café Stage

Stop by the Night Market any time between 6:00 – 9:00 pm from Friday, August 20 – Saturday, August 28 inclusive. Come experience the unique vendors and cultural atmosphere that only the GlobalFest Night Market can offer!

Black Powder Teachings Pavilion

"Tansii!" Welcome! Black Powder Teachings strives to create awareness and understanding between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. Education is one of the key tools for moving forward and living in harmony with ourselves and others. We welcome all visitors to drop by our pavilion. Each night we will be showcasing one aspect of Aboriginal cultural arts and crafts such as drum making and dream catcher demonstration, and welcome folks to try their hand at some of these intricate skills!

Brasil Pavilion
Elisia Teixeira

Visit our pavilion and immerse yourself into the rich Brazilian culture featuring arts, crafts and artifacts from different regions of Brasil, as well as opportunities to talk with native Brazilians. Our contribution to the cultural program includes performances with the "Festa Junina" theme with a "Bumba-Boi" performance, music from Brasil, samba dance by Samba Brasil Heritage Dance Group, and Capoeira.

Learn more about the BrazilianAssociation.org annual calendar of activities, including many cultural events, and participate in a draw for CD's of Brazilian music. You can also try on many of the typical samba costume head pieces and pose for a memorable picture!

Calgary Chinese Merchants Association Pavilion

Kicking off with the anticipated 10th annual Chinatown Street Festival, on Saturday, August 14th, celebrate Calgary Chinatown's 100th Anniversary! Be connected, share the moment, and explore the unique Chinese culture at the CCMA OneWorld pavilion. Learn about the history of Calgary's Chinatown and experience interactive demonstrations of Chinese cultural arts and crafts. The Calgary Chinatown Street Festival, of which GlobalFest is a long-standing partner, is proudly hosted by CCMA - a non-profit association that promotes, protects, and improves the business and development of the Chinese Community.

Cameroon Pavilion

The Cameroon pavilion will be showcasing various artwork from Cameroon, and a map of Cameroon showing all the 10 regions and their diverse culture. The visitors will be able to see the traditional dances, daily life, and diversity of Cameroonians through videos and slide shows. Traditional dresses from different regions will be displayed, and cultural dance groups will promote the richness of Cameroonian heritage through the art of dance. Come and discover the cultural diversity of Cameroon!

Canadian Indonesian Pavilion

"Unity in Diversity." Indonesia has a great story to tell the world! It's a dynamic nation, a determined nation, and a forceful nation with youthful vitality. In comparison to many other countries of the world, Indonesia is a young country, but is on the way to greatness. The Indonesia Pavilion will showcase a combination of its country's sculptures, crafts, progress, posters, and tourism materials and brochures. Our representatives will be wearing the traditional Indonesian costumes, and will be able to provide any information to visitors about Indonesia.

Caribbean Pavilion

This year, the Caribbean Cultural Pavilion will showcase the Arts & Crafts of the Caribbean Islands! Local craft specialist Jenifer Leehim will have a variety of beautifully costumed dolls, beaded necklaces, seashell ornaments, and many other Caribbean theme souvenirs.

Joining Jenifer will be local Caribbean art dealer Kelvin Perez. Kelvin specializes in a large variety of original paintings, and reproductions of popular paintings. Etching and blotch works from very famous Caribbean artists will also be showcased. The mesmerizing sounds of Trinidad & Tobago Organettes Steelband can be heard on selective days of the festival. Central Africa Pavilion

Central Africa will be participating in all three aspects of the OneWorld Festival: displays, performances, and food. In the Central Africa Pavilion you will have the opportunity to discover displays of handicrafts, beautiful costumes, and jewelry. Folk, classical, and contemporary dances will be performed by our very talented artists, and will reflect the diverse culture of Central Africa. We invite all visitors to come enjoy and experience the rich traditions of Central Africa through our display.

Together for Chile Pavilion

Together For Chile's Pavilion will showcase the Chilean culture and its diverse geography and the richness of culture that each region brings. From Antofagasta's copper rich desert region in the north, to Viña Del Mar's world renowned port and home of the famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda in central Chile, to the exquisite Easter Island and their intriguing Moai statues off of southern Chile, all the way to the icy Patagonian region at the bottom of the world.

'Together for Chile' was formed as concerned Canadians came together to assist in emergency relief efforts for Chile after the catastrophic earthquake on Feb 27, 2010. A community-based initiative of individual volunteers and private organizations in partnership with non-profit institutions, Together for Chile's mission is to create a better future for the children and families of Chile through the reconstruction of schools and multi-use facilities in the most devastated areas.

Colombian Pavilion

The ever-growing Colombian community in our city invites you to "Discover Colombia" through its GlobalFest 2010 Pavilion.  At the performance stages, you can experience the joy and creativity of Colombians through the lively sounds of several rhythms such as cumbia, porro and papayera music, all interpreted by Calgary based "TAMCOARE Folk Group."  At the Cultural Pavilion, our visitors have the opportunity to learn about Colombia's diversity of cultures (European, African, and South American Indians) and the large variety of climates and ecosystems distributed in five main regions: Amazon, Orinoco, Caribbean, Pacific, and Andean, each one with its distinct customs and economic activities. You can also enjoy Colombian flavours at our Ethnic Food Kiosk, where empanadas, Colombian chorizo, and grilled meats prepared with the South American cowboy touch will be served.

Congo-RDC Pavilion

Experience the highly energetic culture of the Congo in our OneWorld Village Pavilion. Discover the diversity of Congolese music and dance from different provinces such as Mutuashi, Lopele, Guasuma, and many more. We will also be showcasing our traditional dress in a display fashion show.

Côte d'Ivoire Pavilion

Ivory Coast is very pleased to participate in GlobalFest again this year! "Akwaba" –welcome – are the words that will greet you at the Ivory Coast pavilion. This is the opportunity to discover the arts and crafts (necklaces, jewelry, paintings, textiles, and drums) of the Ivory Coast. There will be African music and dance, such as Gbegbe, Temati, Boloye, and Zaouli, along with masks, puppets, and public participation. Don't miss out on experiencing the unique culture of the Ivory Coast!

Dances of The Middle East Pavilion

Explore the Middle East through its vibrant cultural dances at the Dances of the Middle East Pavilion. Visit the Egyptian Display with information about the origins of bellydance, the Libyan Display and its representation of the Berber culture, and the Saudi Arabian Display with its Khaleegy costumes and artifacts. The Fusion Display will also show how traditional dances of the Middle East have influenced our own western performances and evolved into fascinating mixture of global cultures and dance.

Franco-Albertan Pavilion
French Community Center, La Cité des Rocheuses

Welcome to Franco-Albertan Arts & Heritage Pavilion presented by the French Community Center, La Cité des Rocheuses, where visitors can discover the Franco-Albertan history and heritage. Every evening of fireworks, come see Francophone artists and admire their paintings, literature, sculptures, and music.

Guyana Pavilion

Welcome to Guyana - the El Dorado of the Americas and the only English-speaking country in South America. We are situated on the northeast coast of South America, bordered by Brazil, Venezuela and Suriname. Guyana is a land of "many waters," under whose alluvial soil lie seemingly inexhaustible deposits of gold. We are a land of diverse cultures comprised of six nationalities - Amerindians, Africans, East Indians, Chinese, Portuguese, and other Europeans - with a motto of "One People, One Nation, One Destiny".

 

Come visit our pavilion hosted by the Guyana Canada Cultural Association (Calgary) and see our amazing display of artifacts that are rich in tradition, heritage, and culture. Explore and enjoy the astounding Amazon rain forest with its colourful and vibrant flora and fauna. It will be an experience to last a lifetime!

India Canada Association of Calgary Pavilion

India Canada Association of Calgary is very pleased to participate in GlobalFest again this year! We will be participating in all three aspects (displays, performances and food). In our display booth, visitors will have an opportunity to see excellent India handicrafts, artifacts, and jewelry. There will be henna painting available, and there will be periodical demonstrations of sari draping. INCA will also showcase folk dances, classical dances, and contemporary hip-hop performed by our very talented artists of all ages. These dances will reflect India's vastly diverse culture of different states, and the costumes of all the dancers will be very glamorous as well as ethnic.

Iranian Pavilion
Mehdi Masonmi

Iranian Pavilion is run by "Friends of Children of Labor Cultural Center," a Calgary-based charity group that supports the education and nourishment of Afghani and Iranian working children. We will showcase Persian culture by displaying traditional crafts, clothing, art pieces, and customs purchased and shipped from Iran. Some of our volunteers will be dressed in traditional Iranian clothing. The Shaidaie music band will be performing Iranian traditional and folkloric music during the festival. Kolbeh food and different types of Iranian cuisine will be served in the Iranian ethnic food kiosk.

Mexico Lindo Pavilion

Hola amigos! Once again, the Calmeca Dancers Society returns to GlobalFest to celebrate the Mexican Culture. We welcome everybody to enjoy our display of unique textiles and handcrafts in a Mexican atmosphere. The Calmeca Dancers will perform dances that represent the beautiful traditions of Mexico, from the time of the ancient Aztecs cultures to today. Don't miss the opportunity to practice your Spanish! Authentic Mexican food will be ready for you at the food kiosk.

Réseau Francophone Pavilion
ACFA Regional of Calgary

Welcome to the Calgary French Speaking Network Pavilion presented by the French Canadian Association of Alberta, Calgary Chapter (ACFA), with the participation of several representatives of the Francophone community. The ACFA Regional of Calgary is the representative organization of the French speaking community for Calgary and its region. Spanish Pavilion

Welcome to the land of flamenco, bull fighting, and Sherry wine. Spain's location at the westernmost point of the Mediterranean and its closeness to North Africa has made its culture, music, and history unique to Western Europe. Fineza Flamenca Dance invites you to join their Feria Festivities where colourful flamenco dresses will be swirling to the sounds of Spanish guitar and song. Experience the sights and sounds of Spain's culture, decorate your own fan, get your photo taken as a dancer or guitarist, or learn a few steps of Sevillanas, the beautiful folkloric dance of Southern Spain! Olé!

St Lucia Calgary Cultural Association Pavilion

The St Lucia Calgary Cultural Association is a non-profit organization that promotes cultural understanding among persons of St Lucian origin and the wider Calgary community, and acts as a support group for St Lucians who are new to Calgary. The Association is not restricted to persons of St Lucian origin, as many of its members are from other Caribbean Islands as well as individuals of non-Caribbean ancestry.

Find out more about the host of activities and cultural events that the Association organizes throughout the year, including a Stampede Western Night, Creole Day Celebration, and Lobsterfest.

Enjoy the folk, classical and contemporary performances of the St Lucia Dancers to the tantalizing sounds of quadrille and cadence music. Guests of our pavilion will have the opportunity to learn more about this Island of paradise as seen on ABC's The Bachelor.

St.Vincent & The Grenadines Pavilion

A warm and sunny island greeting from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, best known as the "Jewels of the Caribbean!" We will be featuring a variety of foods at the St. Vincent food kiosk, and we urge you to come out and experience the mouth watering Vincy flavors. There will be an exotic variety of food, such as coconut cakes, sugar cakes, salt fish, bakes, and Jerk Chicken, and plenty of Caribbean drinks to choose from. Once you have experienced this, there is no turning back!

Visit our cultural tent for brochures and learn more about our beautiful island. St. Vincent is the main land, and the Grenadines consist of smaller islands such as Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Petit St. Vincent, and Palm Island. St. Vincent and the Grenadines is also the location for several exotic anchorages. Sykotik Mas Club of Calgary Pavilion

Sykotik Masquerade Club of Calgary is a non-profit organization that designs and constructs Caribbean-style costumes for presentation in Carnival Parades throughout Alberta.

Sykotik's goal is to build awareness among its surrounding community about the historic art of costume building which is an important part of Caribbean and Latin American cultures. Sykotik's focus is to deliver "The Ultimate Carnival Experience" for masqueraders and spectators alike, by creating striking designs in rich and vibrant colors.

Enjoy Caribbean-style performances by dancers from the Diversity Dance and Performing Arts group presented in Sykotik Mas costume. Samples of costumes and head-dresses will be on display giving guests an opportunity to take photos and learn more about the art of costume design and construction.

Tryzub Ukrainian Pavilion

"Vitiayemo!" Welcome! The Tradition of Tryzub is the Tradition of Excellence. Let our music and dazzling entertainment keep your feet tapping and your heart racing. Returning from a sold out three-city tour of Western Canada in 2009, Calgary's world famous Tryzub Ukrainian Dance Ensemble will again provide breath-taking, gravity defying acrobatic dance entertainment. Take advantage of a rare opportunity! Tryzub's performing Ensemble will be available in full costume for photo opportunities with visitors of the Tryzub Ukrainian Pavilion where you'll find displays and information on Calgary's Premier Ukrainian Dance Organization.

EthniCity Catering Food Kiosk

EthniCity Catering is a Social Enterprise of the Centre for Newcomers. The Social Enterprise provides Canadian work experience and workplace essential skills training to immigrants and refugees, most of whom are women with multi-barriers to employment. EthniCity offers a temporary job and training for groups of new Canadians every 12 weeks while serving Calgarians with multi-cultural food through its Catering business.

Any order placed with EthniCity provides opportunities for newcomers to gain Canadian Work Experience, to enhance their Workplace Essential Skills, to increase their opportunity to earn some income and to expand their social network with people from diverse cultures. At the same time it utilizes their existing skills and talents to contribute to the economy and integrate into society.
