From a fireworks dream to one of Calgary's signature festivals. The story of GlobalFest began in 1993 with the formation of The Calgary Fireworks Festival Society. For years, the not-for-profit society searched for a suitable fireworks launch site in Calgary. The challenge was finding a location that could support a large viewing area, meet safety requirements, and allow large-scale pyrotechnics to be launched. After eight years of searching, the society discovered Elliston Park in Calgary's Greater Forest Lawn district in 2001. Around the same time, the International Avenue Arts and Culture Centre was exploring the idea of creating a multicultural festival in East Calgary.

The two groups crossed paths while presenting to the International Avenue BRZ and quickly saw the opportunity to create something bigger together; a world-class celebration of cultural diversity, artistic excellence, and international fireworks.

A Calgary tradition was born.

GlobalFest officially launched in 2003 with 10 cultural pavilions and three countries presenting pyromusical fireworks as part of Calgary's own international fireworks festival. By the fourth and final night of its first year, GlobalFest had reached nearly 100,000 attendees, immediately establishing itself as one of Calgary's top draws for locals and visitors.

What began as a partnership between fireworks, arts, and culture organizations quickly became one of the city's most beloved summer traditions.

Fireworks in the sky. Connection on the ground. GlobalFest's legacy is rooted in the moments people remember: trying something new, watching a performance, sharing food with friends, discovering a new culture, walking the festival grounds with family, and looking up as the night sky comes alive.

For 24 years, GlobalFest has played an important role in Calgary's cultural landscape. It has created space for celebration, representation, education, artistic excellence, and community pride while giving guests an unforgettable summer experience.

A new home at Spruce Meadows. A renewed vision for the future. After a period of uncertainty around GlobalFest's future, Showpass stepped in to help preserve the festival and support its next chapter.

The 2026 edition of GlobalFest will take place August 27–30 at Spruce Meadows, marking an exciting new chapter for the event. With a larger and more flexible festival site, expanded indoor and outdoor areas, improved guest flow, upgraded cultural pavilions, more food and vendor space, drone shows, and enhanced programming, GlobalFest is being reimagined while staying true to what made it special.

Spruce Meadows gives GlobalFest a new home with the scale, infrastructure, and setting to support the festival's evolution.

The move creates more room for cultural programming, food vendors, family areas, sponsor activations, performances, indoor spaces, outdoor gathering areas, and unforgettable evening finales. It also creates new opportunities to make the festival feel more seamless, comfortable, and exciting from arrival to the final burst of fireworks.
